We kick off this month’s round-up with two very special Omega Speedmaster watches. The first is the recently announced Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday 2 ‘Ultraman’ watch, a Speedmaster that is based on a version with an orange seconds hand that showed up in an episode of Ultraman – hence the name. The second is the 1957 Trilogy Speedmaster, which was released last year and is an extremely faithful recreation of the original Speedmaster from 60 years ago.

Omega Speedmasters aside, we also put a spotlight on Cartier. We have a review of their latest Santos watch, and we take a look at their attempts at breaking into the high-end watchmaking market with their Collection Privée Cartier Paris and Fine Watch Making Collection projects.

If you are active on Instagram, you would probably be familiar with the Speedy Tuesday movement. Last year, Omega, together with Robert-Jan Broer of FratelloWatches, launched the first Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday watch. It was sold exclusively online and it proved to be a huge hit among Speedmaster collectors. A year later, they are back at it again with the second Speedy Tuesday watch called the Speedy Tuesday 2 ‘Ultraman.’ This watch was another resounding success, selling out in just over half an hour. Take a look at what most of you have missed.

2. OMEGA SPEEDMASTER ’57 CHRONOGRAPH 38.6MM ‘1957 TRILOGY’ LIMITED EDITION WATCH REVIEW

The 1957 Trilogy Speedmaster Chronograph was released last year by Omega in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Speedmaster. It is not 100% identical to the original but it comes very close. Omega took great pains to make sure that this particular watch was as accurate to the original as it can be. To this end, they actually conducted a 3D scan of the original in order to create the case. This is why this new watch has a case diameter of just 38.6mm. This was big back in the ’50s but modest by today’s standards. Although 3,557 pieces were made by Omega, you would struggle to find one today. If you have missed out on it, take a closer look at it here.

3. ZENITH DEFY CLASSIC WATCH HANDS-ON

Last year, Zenith made headlines when it launched the Defy El Primero 21 and Defy Lab, two watches that boast very interesting movements. Unfortunately, since these watches were targeted mostly at high-end collectors, they came with prohibitive price tags. Zenith is well aware of this and has launched the Defy Classic earlier this year to appease enthusiasts who liked the styling of the earlier two Defy watches but wanted something that was more accessibly priced. With its sharp looks, strong but light titanium case, and 100m water resistance, this could very well be the most well-rounded sports watch by Zenith.

How do you improve and refine on a design that has been around for over a hundred years? If I was given this test, I think I would just roll over and concede. However, Cartier has seemingly pulled off the impossible with their new for 2018 Santos watches. In essence, Cartier has taken all the good stuff that watch enthusiasts love about the Santos and modernized it. The new models look familiar but are also more refined and even practical. One of the best new features of these watches is the QuickSwitch strap change system. In this review, we focus on the ‘Large’ model that has a 39.8mm case.
